{PMONKZ BOOK REVIEW} MEMORY OF LOVE (AMINATTA FORNA) by Poetoby

Aminatta forna's novel, "The Memory of Love" journeyed her readers to an African city, a place where a dying man Elias Cole, reflects on a past obsession: Saffia, the woman he loved, and Julius, her charismatic, unpredictable husband. Arriving in the wake of war Adrian Lockheart is a psychologist new to this foreign land, struggling with its secrets and the intensity of the heat, dust and dirt, until he finds friendship in Kai Mansaray, a young colleague at the hospital. All three lives will collide in a story about friendship, love, war, about understanding the indelible effects of the past and the nature of obsessive love.

This powerful story has the capability to upsurge emotions In its readers, Amanitta's power of convictions emanates from her sense of creation. Weaving characters into settings that match her audience minds. She's an explorer of the deep, the deep in this sense means to evoke emotions where it is rare to be found. That in any reader... Below is  The Telegraph, April 2010 about this great Novel written by an African, named Amanitta forna.

"Forna weaves an intricate tapestry of betrayal, tragedy and loss; expertly drawing together the threads that link the sick old man, the brilliant doctor with dreams of leaving his troubled homeland, the wounded English psychologist and the young woman who links the three of them in a common bond of love. This is an ambitious project. Forna has written before about the power of storytelling to talk our lives into different shapes. Here she moves deftly between the enchantments of different narratives: the therapeutic, the confessional, the traumatic—flashbacks, nightmares, hauntings, fugue states where stories are lost or distorted beyond recognition and the sweetly joyous themes of new love, renewal, springing hope, second chances." — The Telegraph, April 2010.

If you are a disciple of truth, love in its purest term, you need to go get your hand on the Novel. The Memory of Love, its one of the best love story every written.

{Pmonkz Music} REACTION by JFK

JFK [ J-Stacks & F-Kronik] is a performing and recording group made of two brothers [ Frank  & Charles Nwachukwu]. Despite their subject to the Nigerian music system, the brothers have maintained their  style of music and this is evident in their music as they tell us about their music influence from acts like 2face Idibia, P-Square, Sound Sultan, D'banj,  Wande Coal, Jay-Z, Alicia Keys and Kanye West, just to mention a few. Though they have been into music and performing as well for some time now, it is safe to say they are set to take the Nigerian music industry in full course. In their words: "what will be, will always be no matter the delay".
They are currently out with 2 new singles titled "Reaction" and "Me and My Baby", which are both set to hit the air waves, clubs and TV stations soonest, as they draw support from their accrued fans, their mother, friends and relations as well.

{Pmonkz Music} GAGAZ by Point Reazon

GAGAZ, as funny as the name sounds, is one sick tune you'd like to listen to...,It is the second official single from POINT REAZON besides his mixtape songs and his first drop, "BLO-MA-MIND".

However, this is a "must-listen-to" Song. WHY? ...it has a Crowd-Control feel, a Call-and-Response Chorus that registers and able to carry listeners along.
A must-hear-song, WHY? .. the beat is something INSANE, the lyrics is another,..'STUPIDLY-SICK' could be a word to describe both the artist and the song. He was referring to crazy girls, yet dropping a few liners on how he stays hustling for good.
"Where my LadyGAGAZ??" .. Perhaps, A rhetorical Question. Perhaps, POINT REAZON has an answer to his question.
Listen for yourself. Enjoy the music.

{Pmonkz Chat} 10mins with DJ-Jimmy Jatt by Edward Fortune

He’s a master in his craft and when it comes to disc jockeying, he’s a pundit. I call him the father on many nations {as long as Disc jockeying in Nigeria in concerned}. He recently got Lagos locked down where the crème de la crème in the entertainment industry in Nigeria gathered to bless the Mic at his  just concluded JIMMY’S JUMP OFF show. Sometime in the middle of the year, he launched his snap back cap which has become a fashion item amongst celebrities. He’s no doubt Africa’s finest when it comes to making you move and tear up the dance floor. I had a chart with “COOL” Dj Jimmy Jatt at his Lekki mansion and he gave me a little insight about his job and what it takes to be like him.

Enjoy:

*You have built a brand for yourself, how have you been able to do so?

I think it’s just passion for what you do. I love what I do and I keep  working at it with the hope of bettering myself and first of all the grace of God. And also the fact that people appreciate what you do, it just makes you step up your game all the time so you can become an effective brand.

*Qualities of a good DJ?

Your ability to read minds. Though you can’t read everybody’s mind. If you are able to read about 90% of the people’s mind it’s really a good shot for you.

*What does it take to get Jimmy Jatt play to in a show?

First, you have to make a phone call to contact me, tell me the date. If it’s free I would tell you what it would cost you and when you make the payment into my account and it reflects, then you have a date with me at your event.

Your definition of a good song?

It’s relative. It depends on what time the song flows. I always tell people who say stuffs like “the song does not have meaning; the song does not make sense”. What is a song made for? If it’s for the dance floor, you have to just get with the flow. And there are times when you just want to sit down and reflect and just let music flow, u wouldn’t want to hear a dance song. So a good song just applies to the situation at hand. It’s when you need the song that determines if it’s good at that time or not.

*One thing one must have at the back of their minds before going into the act?

It’s not like buying and selling. It’s not a store, it’s not a business that you tell yourself that I put in this amount of money and am expecting this amount. You must have the passion for music because if you are going to stand for hours and play for people and you really don’t have the interest, how do you intend to play for long? I have been on stage for about 11hours playing and it’s because of the passion I have for it. So the main key is that you need to have the passion for music and you need to love life itself for you to be a good DJ. The happiness within you transcends into the kind of music you dish out on the dance floor.

*How does it feel to be the most sorts after DJ in Nigeria?

Well that’s a privilege information you are giving me. For me, I just try and work on my hands and if you give me an opportunity to play, I work like I am trying to create a name for myself. You give me one small opportunity; I use it to get a bigger one that would give me ten more gigs. If I play in ten, I make sure I use it to get hundred more gigs. I don’t go and play like “hey I’m jimmy Jatt”. I go there like I need to create a long lasting impression and somehow for some reason, I have been able to improve for so long.

*When you started out, did you see yourself going this far?

Well sometimes you really don’t want to say you see most things that would happen. I won’t say so. I would say I just took it one day at a time. It’s like when you love something, you keep looking at it and keep looking at the next level and there is always a next level. You can never get to the height of anything in life.  But some people always think that when they get to a particular point, they have gotten to the highest level and that’s because they do not realize that there are some people who have gone beyond where they are. So for me, I always believe that there is a next level, you will keep climbing and will keep making progress.

*Would you say you feel so fulfilled being a DJ?

I won’t say so. Let me tell you the truth. You look around you and you see a lot of people around you that have got a lot of money and you probably want to envy them because they are probably rich and all that. The truth is money is not everything all times. The joy and satisfaction you derive from what you do most time can’t be equated to certain things. Some people just wear tie everyday of their lives and sit in one place when they are suppose to be on stage singing for people. They don’t derive satisfaction from what they do but they make money from it. And at the end of the day, the money you are trying to make is to secure happiness because you won’t derive joy from it and you end up living a very boring life. I am living a very beautiful life because I derive joy from what I do and I do what I do because it makes me happy. So if you look at it from that angle, then I would say yes. I am much fulfilled.

Indigenous Yoruba crooner Mayor Wete returns to the limelight with his exciting new single “Mawomi” - the first in over three years for the Ogun State native. Now signed to Dozage Records, Mayor Wete is in flying form on “Mawomi” which is an outstanding indigenous Nigerian Pop song that is bound to get your head bopping, your feet moving and an 100% party starter for the clubs and dance floors in the coming months.

{PMONKZ CHAT} 10mins with J-Martins by Edward Fortune

He was recently honored alongside actor Jim Iyke at the Cameroon Entertainment Awards held at the prestigious Cramton Auditorium in
Washington DC weeks ago. Pop-high life singer-producer Martins Okey
better known as J-Martins, is one of the few Nigerian artist that explores the deepest part of their creative ability just to deliver good and quality sounds. Signed under  Efe Omoroegbe's owned Now muzik management, J-martins is just an exceptional being when it comes to celebrating the African kind of music. A happily married man with notable awards to his credits and charts bursting song, his profile keeps rising up both local and internationally. I was privileged to spend 20 minutes with the "good or bad" crooner and words can't qualify how deeply impressed i was after we had a little chat.

Excerpt:
*You have been able to feature 2 big African artist on your songs, how did it happen and what were the challenges you faced?

Fally Ipupa and I have been friends since way back when he was still with Koffi Olomide fine tuning his act, so hooking him up on a track was not difficult at all. We had played wit the idea severally in time past. I guess the usual challenge is the logistics of the recording process which technology has made much easier now. Same with Cabo Snoop, they are both easy going people. Much of the challenges were at the video shoot stage, in all I will say it went pretty smooth.

*What's your view about the saying that your song isn't for the Nigeria market and that you focuse more on the Africa and international market?

To the best of my knowledge, Nigeria is in Africa and a lot of these African countries are feeling Nigerian music. 2Face, P Square, Flavour and a host of Nigerian artistes are well accepted outside the shores of Nigeria.  I wouldn't say I do music for a particular people, I just make good music and hope people get to listen and appreciate it irrespective of who they are and their geographical location. Anyways, I'm grateful for the love I'm receiving from my African brothers and even Europe and America.

*What has kept you believing in your type of music and how has it been?

The journey has been both exciting and challenging but we bless God for his guidance, support and the vision. We just try to keep it simple and infuse a bit of our identity. I believe with God all things are possible.

*What is the biggest thing you have acquired as a musician?

By the grace of God the music is putting food on our table, shelter over our head and a lot of things that makes us comfortable in life, so we bless God. I think the biggest thing I've gotten from this gift of God is the fan base which is growing by the day.

*What is best you have been paid as a performer?

I will need the assistance of my management ( Now Muzik ) to answer this question. Anyways, we dey try and I believe the sky is the limit.

*Has fame changed you and what's your take on popular believe that fame change most artiste from good to bad?

Fame and Change! By the grace of God I'm still myself. There are heights we still wish to attain, so, heads down and work in progress. By the special grace of God we will get to where God has prepared for us. Then again, I cannot judge myself, it's the people out there who can really say if J Martins has changed (for good or bad).

{PMONKZ BOOK REVIEW} YELLOW YELLOW {Kaine Agari} by Poetoby

Yellow yellow is an award winning Novel written by Kaine Agary. The novel happens to be her maiden novel.
This book tells the story of Zilafeya. She is raised in the village by her mother and is called Yellow-Yellow, or just Yellow, as a slur on the fact that her skin is lighter due to her father having been Greek. Through this parentage Agary explores the issue of transient visitors / workers in Nigeria and the children, the father and then leave, and the ways in which these children suffer because of that not only by being raised by single mothers (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing or portrayed as being a disadvantage, simply that the women and children are stigmatized sometimes because of it) but also because of the difficulties they face due to their skin color. It was interesting especially to see the generational changes in terms of this situation.

Zilafeya’s mother is shown to be both controlling and domineering, always wanting the best for her child. She works extra hard in order that Zilafeya, or Yellow, can go on to university as university is everything, they believe. Even though she is a single parent she is doing everything she can for her daughter to succeed. Although she can be controlling and is always pushing her views onto Yellow, Yellow is shown as not really having any plans of her own so it isn’t necessarily a bad thing that her mother is always pushing her to succeed.

This book won the award for Nigeria literature for the year 2008. The author of "Yellow Yellow" has the power to convict characters and toil with the readers emotion.

{PMONKZ CHAT} 10 minutes with SHINE of Cool FM by EDWARD FORTUNE

She wakes you up early in the morning and makes sure you are in the right frame of mind while trying to get the day started with her daily morning show she calls "The good morning Nigeria show" which last from the early hours of 5am - 10am. And in order to make sure you don' tmiss her too much, she returns on Sundays again with her afternoon show called "chill out zone" from 2pm-7pm.
She's tall, beautiful and like to be addressed as " Warri girl with the yankee swaggs." Shine Begho is an on air personality with one of Nigeria's leading radio stations in Nigeria, COOL FM and the brain behind the only rave that celebrates top celebrities under one umbrella. We caught up with her and she gave us a little insight into what inspired her to starting her periodic rave tagged "SHINE WITH THE STARS"

WHO EXACTLY IS SHINE?
My full name is Anino Judy Shine Begho . Am an Itsekiri girl from Delta state, Warri to be precise. (A Warri girl with a yanky swag). Well am a fun loving entertaining girl and people usually say "never a dull moment with shine"

EDUCATION BACKGROUND?
Am a B.SC holder. I majored in mass communication in Madonna university, Okija Anambra State.

CAREER AS AN O.A.P, HOW DID IT ALL START?
My career as an O.A.P started two weeks after graduation ..I started as a tv presenter with galaxy television Lagos,  then i found radio in2008 and started doing both together striking a balance,it was funny. You see me on tv then you hear me on radio that was Eko fm Lagos then.I moved to Abuja and I got a radio job with Hot fm Abuja. I  got tiredof Abuja. I missed Lagos so I came back and then I joined Classic FmLagos and then moved to City Fm Lagos and the Rainbow Fm and then zoodrums radio which was an internet radio and now am with Cool Fm Lagos. What a journey you would say but believe me, I learn every step ofthe way , gathering experience every where I found myself.

YOUR MAIDEN EDITION OF "SHINE WITH THE STARS" WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND IT?
Shine with the stars is one of my pet project. I don't want people to know me for just being a radio personality, I want them to know me also for something else but not just the usual. Something different but uniquely different because I love doing my things in a unique and different way. A rave has never being done in Nigeria so am happy tosay am the first but not just a  rave but a celebrity rave. Am trying to connect fans with their favorite celebrity in close range having fun with each other and networking etc. Making dreams come true. So its a night of hanging out with me, Shine and other celebs under one roof getting our groove on with our fans so we can all relate with each other. Don’t forget its these fans that make us celebs. 'Shine with the stars celebrity rave' as you can see my name is attached to it so you know Shine with the stars is me and am here to stay ,make a difference and yes Shine with the stars is going to tour. I think big so by God's grace we going to tour soon from Nigeria to other African countries and then Europe.

HOW WAS IT ACCEPTED?
To God be the glory, It was accepted well  in fact it was a huge success after the first series people kept asking when the next series of shine with the stars celebrity rave will take place.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU INTEND TO MAKE IT HAPPEN?
Shine with the stars will take place every 2 months and of course with themes. The first series was a club rave and now the second series  is a "celebrity pool rave" and am not going to  tell you the other themes. You will know when the time comes.

CHALLENGES YOU FACED STAGING THE EVENT?
Hmm. Challenges, well its the usual getting of sponsors which every one knows could be very difficult so I have to use funds from my own pocket but you know when you start something new you have to make couple of sacrifice. So this is the sacrifice I have to do before I start getting sponsors. The sweet thing is that later on this sponsors will be the on to chase me. (Oluwa is involved.)

WHEN IS THE NEXT “SHINE WITH THE STARS” HAPPENING?
Well with God on our side, we looking at 25th of next month (August). And the venue is BONYOVAGE HOTEL. Victoria island, Lagos, and the red carpet starts 8pm.

{PMONKZ BOOK REVIEW} FAMISHED ROAD BY POETOBY

The Famished Road is a novel well written by renowned author Ben Okri. One of the exciting writers of modern-contemporary novelists.
The novel, published in 1991, follows an abiku or a spirit  child, living in a nameless most likely Nigerian city. "The famished Road" is a novel that  employs a unique narrative style incorporating the spirit world with the "real" world in what some have classified as magical realism. Others have labeled it animosity- reality.  While others choose to simply call the novel fantasy literature. The book exploits the belief in the coexistence of the spiritual and material worlds that is a defining aspect of traditional African life.
Herein are characters that majored in the Novel "The famished Road" .
Azaro is the story's narrator. He is an abiku, or a spirit child who has never lost ties with the spirit world. He is named after Lazarus, of the New testament. The story follows him as he tries to live his life, always aware of the spirits trying to bring him back.
Azaro's father is an idealistic load-carrier who wants the best for his family and the community. He suffers greatly for this, eventually becoming a boxer and later a politician. Azaro's father loves him deeply, but is often bitter at having an abiku and occasionally goes on angry violent tirades.
Azaro's mother works very hard selling anything she can get her hands on for the family. She cares for her family deeply and constantly gives up food and security for her family and their ideals. She is proud that Azaro is her son and goes to great lengths to protect him.
Madame Koto is proprietress of a local bar. She has a liking for Azaro, though at times is convinced he brings bad luck. She starts out as a well-meaning woman, trying to get along with everyone else. However, as the story progresses, she becomes richer, siding with the political party of the rich, and is often accused of witchcraft. She tries to help Azaro and his family on numerous occasions but seems to try to take Azaro's blood to remain youthful.
Jeremiah, the Photographer is a young artist who brings the village to the rest of the world and the rest of the world to the village. He manages to get some of his photographs published, but practices his craft at great personal risk.

This Novel has a strong legacy which perhaps was the inspiration behind the lyrics to Radiohead's single "Street Spirit (Fade Out)".    A novel that tells Africa's black power in a realism.
